What counts as a dental emergency?
- Severe Toothache – Persistent or severe tooth pain may indicate decay, infection, nerve inflammation or a dental abscess. Early assessment can prevent further complications.
- Broken or Chipped Teeth – A cracked or fractured tooth may expose the sensitive inner layers of the tooth, increasing the risk of pain and infection. Early treatment improves the chances of saving the tooth.
- Dental Abscesses – Dental abscesses require urgent attention. Symptoms may include: Severe pain, Swelling, Bad taste in the mouth, Difficulty swallowing, Fever.
Seek immediate dental care if you experience these symptoms.
- Knocked-Out Tooth – If a permanent tooth has been knocked out: Pick it up by the crown (not the root), Gently rinse if dirty, Try to place it back into the socket if possible
If not, keep it in milk or saliva, Contact us immediately.
The sooner you’re seen, the greater the chance of saving the tooth.
- Lost Crown or Filling – Although it may not always be painful, a missing filling or crown leaves the tooth vulnerable to further damage. Prompt replacement helps protect the remaining tooth structure.
What to do right now

A short guide for the first hour. Don’t worry about getting these perfect, the most important step is the phone call.
Right now – Call us on 020 8420 7407. Tell whoever answers what’s happened, they’ll triage and book you in the same day where possible.
Before you arrive – Take paracetamol or ibuprofen if you can (follow the packet dose). Avoid aspirin if anything is actively bleeding. Sip cold water for a swelling.
For a knocked-out tooth – Hold it by the crown, rinse briefly (milk if you have it), and try to push it back into the socket. If you can’t, put it in a small container of milk, not water, and bring it with you.
If we’re closed – For severe pain or trauma overnight, call NHS 111, they’ll direct you to an out-of-hours dental service. For uncontrolled bleeding, breathing difficulty, or rapidly spreading facial swelling, go to A&E.
